T20 World Cup captaincy: Jay Shah says there’s still time
The outstanding performance of India in the ODI World Cup, led by Rohit Sharma, has been duly acknowledged by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Sharma recently reviewed the World Cup final defeat and talked about future plans with senior BCCI officials and selectors. Still, there has been no official word on whether Sharma will captain the team at the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
“The Indian Premier League and the series against Afghanistan (in January) take place prior to the World Cup, which begins in June. As stated by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, “We will perform well,” on the fringes of the Mumbai WPL auction on Saturday. choice.”
Since the World Cup in Australia last year, Sharma has not participated in a T20 match. The selectors have a variety of options to choose from. Players who are vying for the top spots include Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal. In a similar vein, since the previous World Cup, Virat Kohli has not participated in any T20 matches.
Following an ankle injury sustained during the ODI World Cup, Hardik Pandya, who will captain the T20 team in Sharma’s absence, might be ready to go back into action soon. “He is under constant observation by us. He is working extremely hard at the NCA. Before the Afghanistan series, he might even be well,” Shah remarked.
India’s T20 team will be captained by Suryakumar Yadav in place of Pandya for the three-match T20 series against Afghanistan.
Following the World Cup, Rahul Dravid’s tenure as coach was extended; Shah stated that although a contract has not yet been signed, one has been worked out. Dravid is anticipated to serve as the T20 World Cup coach and assist in assembling the team for the historic occasion.
The next home game for the Indian Test team will not be a pink-ball Test; instead, it will be a five-match series against England. Shah expressed the need to increase interest in pink-ball Test matches in India, saying that “Test matches should last for 4-5 days, whereas matches end quickly.”
Regarding Mohammed Shami’s fitness, Shah expressed assurance that the fast bowler would be prepared for the Test match against South Africa. The BCCI had stated that Shami, the World Cup’s top wicket-taker, would need to demonstrate his fitness before being selected due to an ankle injury.
As for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the BCCI does not presently have any intentions to turn it into a home-and-away competition similar to the IPL. The matches are probably going to be held in a cluster in a single state, so logistics are crucial. “Both the BCCI and the franchises will participate in the call jointly. Without a doubt, it will be in a single state, according to Shah.
Uncapped Kashvi Gautam and Vrinda Dinesh, two important players from the WPL auction, were welcomed by Shah, who said the teams’ strong interest in Indian players will benefit the Indian women’s team. The second or third week of February is when the next WPL is anticipated to begin.
