Rituraj, Yashasvi, Tilak, or Rinku Singh are not among them! Jason Roy describes the 24-year-old sensation as “the future of batting.”
Renowned opening batsman Jason Roy, who was a key member of England’s ODI World Cup-winning team in 2019, has backed rising Indian opener Shubman Gill as the future face of batting. Gill, 24, was in excellent form throughout 2023, scoring an impressive 1584 runs in 29 One-Day International matches. Notably, he is the only Indian batsman who will have scored at least one century in all three formats of the game in 2023, having topped the ODI batsmen rankings in November.
Aside from these accomplishments, Gill made history by becoming the youngest batsman in ODI history when he scored 208 runs in 149 balls against New Zealand in Hyderabad on January 18, 2023.
During the ‘You Have to Answer’ segment on ESPN Cricinfo, Roy, who is currently playing for Chennai Braves in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, was tasked with predicting the future of batting. As a result, he preferred Gill to his English colleague, Harry Brook. His form has dipped since joining IPL 2023, despite a promising start to his international career and notable contributions in Test matches with his aggressive batting. Brook, who has struggled to score enough for England in all three formats, has been named to the ODI World Cup squad.
In six matches, the 2023 team managed only 169 runs. The 24-year-old right-handed batsman was not initially chosen for the 10-team mega event, but was later added to the squad in place of Roy due to his unexpected omission.
